Small Oil Paintings

The 145th Annual Exhibition of Small Oil Paintings presented by the Philadelphia Sketch Club represents one of the longest running exhibitions in the country. This
year's show runs from April 6 through April 27 with a reception on April 6 from 2 to 5 PM. The exhibition will feature over 150 works by prominent and emerging artists.
Traditionally, the exhibition also features a work by each of the three jurors. This year's Jurors are Alan Fetterman, Alex Kanevsky and Rebecca Saylor Sack. Images
of their works are attached. In addition to awards for the best works in the exhibition, there will also be special awards for the best landscape, still life, portrait and abstract.

Visual Culture CollagePlease join us for an evening featuring Donald Cresswell and Christopher Lane, co-owners of the Philadelphia Print Shop since 1982. Dr. Cresswell and Mr. Lane have worked as curators, lecturers, writers, and appraisers – most notably appearing on the Antiques Roadshow. In addition to talking about why they were drawn to the print world, they will highlight their favorite historical prints and discuss why these prints are important. Audience members will have the chance to interact with the speakers during an extended question and answer session. This event kicks off the Library Company's new Visual Culture Program, to promote the interpretation, collection, and care of historical visual materials.

Baldpate Mountain is the highest point in Mercer County, NJ located just north of Washington Crossing, NJ. along the Delaware River. Previously owned by Trap Rock Industries, Baldpate Mountain is now the 1,200 + acre Ted Stiles Preserve. The elevation is 480 feet with about 10 miles of marked hiking trails. Baldpate is home to many unusual plants including the green violet and the redbud as well as some of the largest breeding populations of forest interior birds in this part of New Jersey according to a publication by the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space.

Most trails involve climbing or descending, sometimes steeply. Some sections may be wet and muddy. Some trails include steep stone steps, which require a moderate degree of caution. None are paved. Some vantage points offer expansive views of the Delaware River and surrounding New Jersey and Pennsylvania countryside. We will meet at the new parking area (under construction Jan. 2008) on Fidler's Creek Road 0.2 miles from from the turn from Rt. 29 along the river. Meet there at 11:00 AM. Pack a lunch and allow at least 3 hours. The length of the hike will depend on the group but one option will be a visit to the Howell Living History Farm located just outside the north perimeter of the preserve where there are rest rooms. A special event occuring at the farm that day is "sheep birthing". The farm is 130 acres and operates as it did in 1900.

The TreeVitalize 2008 Philadelphia Street Tree Planting Program will support neighborhood volunteer tree planting by supplying trees and limited services to help prepare planting locations. This year, TreeVitalize has an open application process. Organizations and groups from across Philadelphia that are willing and able to organize a neighborhood volunteer tree planting event of at least 10 trees are invited to apply. Submitting an application does not guarantee your group will receive trees. Eligibility and selection criteria are described below. Funding for seasonal plantings is limited.

Completed applications, along with signed property owner tree request forms, must be received no later than:
5:00 pm on May 1, 2008
at PHS offices, 100 N. 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103.

ERIN EXPRESS is a bar crawl of some of Philadelphia's finest Irish establishments. It was started by William Pawliczek of Cavanaugh's and Paul Ryan, Sr. of Smokey Joe's over 30 years ago.
There is no cost, no tickets, no reservations, no bracelets and no cover charge while busses are running! There are 8 buses that run from 12:30 PM until 5:30 PM on March 8 and March 15. They run in a continuous loop so there is no starting point and no ending point!

So show up to any participating bar, get a beverage and when you're ready to move on, go outside and a bus should arrive every 15-20 minutes to take you to the next bar!

The City Wide Vice Unit has been very active these past two weeks in the neighborhood. Below are the results of their efforts. There have been many complaints in the neighborhood about prostitutes being ignored by the police and they've heard the voice of the neighborhood.

Comcast Plays 'Dirty Pool'

I think this story has merit since we're the home of Comcast (for better or worse) and everyone who uses the internet will be effected by the bellow story.

The F.C.C. had a hearing on Net Neutrality and Comcast's role in singling out and slowing down data packets from bit-torrentz and other peer to peer technologies. Comcast bussed people in to fill up the room at the hearings but they were not employees, instead they were people given cash right off the street to sit in the room. This left legitimate people who wished to air their ideas and thoughts at the hearing outside in the cold.

By now your eyes are glazing over, so let me define a few terms:

Net Neutrality: The idea that everyone gets the same level/speed of internet service, no matter what they send over email, bit torrentz or have on their websites.

Data Packets: Information passed along the 'tubes' of the internet, pictures, text, email... everything.

Bit-Torrentz: Instead of downloading an entire file, BitTorrent breaks a file into chunks and distributes them among several participating users.

Peer-to-Peer: My computer to your computer.

Comcast has violated the very idea of Net Neutrality by limiting the speed/level of service specific types of information get on their broadband network. This sets a president that telecoms can pick and choose what information will get preference in the future. Advocates of Net Neutrality are fighting to keep all information free of this kind of censorship.

Ideas Backed by Action

A personal rant, if you will, feel free to skip this article it’s not an important announcement or pressing event.

Starting out in life I was, and still am, a fully trained artist (whatever that means, there’s a piece of paper on my wall) and Ideas were the food stuff I lived on all day long. I would sit around at home or at my low wage job and dream up things and complain about how things ought to be done.

Eventually the Dreams and Ideas either consume a person’s spare time or spur them into Action. It took about four years to kick start my own engine into an Idea to Action assembly line. I took on the roll of producing a product that people could use and consume, while at the same time be wrapped up in the Ideas that had taken so long to put into Action.

Fast forward to today, the present, and my involvement with the neighborhood. I’m fully embroiled in the local Civic Association and tossing about Ideas and putting them into Action. Neighborhood events, awareness campaigns, zoning matters, taking in complaints from residents and trying to find solutions through… Action.

Then here comes the Democratic Primary and all kinds of people I’ve never even met, in the neighborhood, who come popping out of lawyer’s offices and private condos. Apparently we have Democratic Committee People and Ward Leaders who want our votes. But for the past two years I’ve never met any of them or seen them at Neighborhood improvement meetings, clean-up days, or a civic Board Meeting. It seems that the only time any of them are interested in interacting with the community is when they need votes. They have lots of Ideas but no Action and that speaks to a serious problem I have with the political process.

How can you represent a community with Ideas and no Action? Words are just ephemeral objects that anyone with a mouth (or a blog) can spread about at will. I could promise to lower taxes in the city, right now here on this website, but that won’t make it happen. You have to take Action. Pick up some litter, take part in a community meeting, start a neighborhood improvement program, get some grant money to install lamp posts… just DO something. You won’t get my vote with just Ideas, I want to see a history of Action to prove your credibility.

Arlene Ackerman, the former San Francisco schools superintendent, was named as City School Chief yesterday by Mayor Nutter, with Gov. Rendell's support. The School Reform Commission will subject her to review before final approval.

Arlene Ackerman Summary:

Helped San Francisco redistribute it's funding structure so that school in poverty areas were given more.
Known for 'cleaning up' government spending on schools.
Known for having trouble relating with Unions and critics to work out equitable agreements.
Described as an 'autocrat' or 'dictator' by former colleagues.
Despite her troubles with Board of Education and long term staff members Ackerman has improved every school system she's been in charge of financially and organizationally.

Shoplifting Nannies

Another WSWCA forum announcement, Twice Happily Ever After on Pine Street has been hit up by shoplifting nannies. On two separate incidents nannies who claim to meet once a week and looking for a craft project have entered the establishment, with their charges (the children they are supposed to be taking care of) and attempted to pocket collector dolls from the back of the store. The first time this happened with two children in tow and when confronted the woman took off dragging them out of the shop. The second time the nanny in question had one girl with her and when confronted pretended to deny she was doing anything wrong and tried to hide her activities from the child. No arrests have been made since nothing has yet been stolen, but keep your eye out. Frankly, in this writer’s opinion, anyone who takes children into a situation like that, especially children they are charged in taking care of should be hung up by their thumbs.

STARMAN – Con-man strikes Wash West Businesses

On the WSWCA forums there has been talk of a man who has been ripping off several stores in our neighborhood. At times this wily character puts on airs like he’s an interior designer, a wedding planner or just a guy with a lot of dough to spend. His most distinguishing mark is a star tattoo under his left eye, which he sometimes uses cosmetics to cover. He is described as a light skinned African American who talks with a feminine voice, dresses flamboyantly (hair and cloths), large in stature about 180-200lbs and older looking around the 40’s. Starman has been known to carry out whole shelves worth of goods, if you see this man immediately call 911 and contact all surrounding businesses.

Jukebox Etiquette By Angry Pub Guy

It’s Monday night and I’m beat. The day has been long, the child has been cranky and it’s been one of those times when I can only find ¾ of the stuff I’m looking for in the house. So when 9PM rolls around it’s time to bundle the baby off to bed with Mom and hit my local watering hole.

I’ve brought a book, I’ve got my beer, there are 35cent wings in abundance… and the Jukebox is playing some god awful tune from the 80s. Not just any kind of 80s music though, the type where pink spandex and teased hair fight it out with a Casio for most annoying object in sight. I think… OK, this will end. After all, there is always the next song.

Ten songs later I’m still listening to an never ending stream of show tunes, Paula Abdul and what I can only term as ‘gay-pop’ for lack of a more PC adjective (I’m not terribly PC to begin with, so don’t bother writing me because I don’t care). Over at the far end of the bar three guys are continuing to throw down at least $30 into the Jukebox to keep the pink pussy cat music alive and kicking. The locals are groaning. I’m getting distracted from my calm. Everyone is looking at each other as if to say, “If you don’t pull the plug out of the wall I will… after I finish this beer.”

Long story short, there has to be some sort of Etiquette for this sort of situation. In a perfect world, my favorite bar tender would have been on duty that night and he would have pulled the machine off the wall and kicked it down the street. However he wasn’t and so I’m left to ponder what is the flash point when a regular patron stands up and cries out for justice? And who does he cry to, if you’re stuck with a wishy washy bartender?

A group of people can not simply monopolize the Jukebox for hours on end. It’s not right. It’s not American. Going the bar should include an eclectic mix of music that fits the crowd. If you’re not a regular at a bar you should have the good taste not to subjugate the entire room to your taste in music, no matter if it’s good or bad.

In retaliation I put up Freebird, Fuel and Patience, which gave me enough time to finish my drinks and get out of there before the happy plastic music came back. Calm ruined.

Technology Column: Why Philly Just Doesn’t Get the Internet.

With a town busting at the seams with technological talent why can’t the big marketing organizations of Philadelphia embrace the internet?

This is a question I’ve been asking myself for months now, over coffee, while I’m eating bagels, at work, feeding Maya, watching paint dry…etc. I know of at least ten web companies in town that provide internet marketing services to anyone with a budget. Center City District and the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce definitely have a budget, are definitely looking to promote Philadelphia but definitely dropping the ball.

The mentality seems to be this. I have a website. It’s a rather nice website and it’s spawned several smaller websites. Good website, breed like puppies and soon everyone will visit you and love you and come to Philadelphia.

The only problem with this is that I have to seriously hunt around to find these websites. There is zero, zilch, nada internet marketing going on with these beautiful and very useful homes of digital paraphernalia. If you don’t know the name of the organization you won’t find them. If you do a search on Google for “Philadelphia events”, you get Gophila.com, and a bunch of other “fun guides”, listing sites, and ticket venders… but nothing on the CCD and GPCC. This is easily fixed, no really, it’s called Adwords and it’s so simple to use that it’s become a cottage industry for people like myself.

Other than a complete lack of a Pay-Per-Click campaign (basic search engine marketing 101, people) most of these sites lack interactivity. When you’re talking about marketing an entire city, like Philadelphia, people who live here have a lot of opinions. A few of them are actually quite good ideas which you can glean, and use in your future projects. In fact you’re likely to find all sorts of people participating in a forum or blog and some of them will want to join your organization to help out. The trick is to provide great content (not mediocre) and to keep conversations rolling along.

These ideas are no different than traditional marketing and networking, used in the real world. The only difference is that it’s online and therefore more accessible to the very people you need to reach. So please… for the love of god, hire a Internet Marketing company to help you. At the very least get an overpaid consultant who will tell you to do what I’m telling you for free.

Miserable, Fat and Grumpy: Philadelphia’s Dwarves

It’s been a fad, recently, to poll cities on certain important things like… how fat we are (insert sarcasm). But I want to see a poll that talks about the strengths Philly has to offer. Here is a list that I think Philadelphia would top the charts on:

Honesty: Talk to an Eagles fan, he’ll tell you to your face that his team sucks, but he still loves him. Politicians don’t even have to hide their corruption in Philly, you know who you’re voting for.

Work Ethic: This town works hard. Hard at rebuilding, changing and fighting for change.

Rent: For a major metro area we’ve got the cheapest rooms to rent.

Art Education: There are no less than 4 schools offer programs in Philly, we’re swimming in creativity.

Retaining Current Talent

Philadelphia Greater Chamber of Commerce is having a forum on recruiting Global talent to Philly (see the link at bottom). I would pose that we should be concentrating on keeping our own talent from fleeing the city, like butterflies migrating to warmer climes. All I hear about from young people in supermarkets, pubs, the street, stores… is that they can’t wait to graduate and go to California, Boston, NYC or even (shudders) the suburbs.

Mayor Nutter, please guide these very talented people into a low rent, low taxed land where milk and honey flows as easily as BPR and Jim Beam. “Keep Your Peoplllllle Hooooome.”
