Deemed perhaps the ultimate tour-de-force of the entire bel canto repertoire, this 19th-Century Italian work is rife with the raw passion that opera lovers crave. Norma, a Druid priestess, has broken her vows of celibacy and mothered two children with Pollione, ruler of the opposing Roman army. After urging her Druid people not to war against the Romans, Norma learns that Pollione is in love with Adalgisa, unleashing a torrent of emotions, from revenge and despair to ultimate love and honor. And when Norma sings the incomparable "Casta Diva" that defined legendary operatic voices like Maria Callas, the entire operatic world stands still.
